The Book of Eli: so much more than bad ass sunglasses

The Book of Eli is an unexpectedly fantastic movie. I knew nothing about it because no one I know has seen it or said anything about it. Why am I not hearing more about this movie? It was very surprising, different , and quite amazing. I don't want to spoil anything.

See this movie.

When you've done that, comment on this post.

There will be a another Book of Eli post to come, but I'm going to give you a few weeks to rent it and form your own opinions.

  1. Okay, we'll rent it. The huge Gary Oldman billboard here in town had me considering a trip to the theater to see this one a few months ago, but I never saw it. I wasn't sufficiently stoked, I guess.

I'm not really a Denzel Washington fan. On one hand, I did like him in PHILADELPHIA. On the other hand, I couldn't get into MAN ON FIRE or RICOCHET. (But on the other hand, I really liked TRAINING DAY.)

My gut sense, I guess, was that BOOK OF ELI would be more like MAN ON FIRE than any of the other above-mentioned movies. That's as well as I can articulate my relative non-excitement about BOOK OF ELI.

  2. Passing on BOOK OF ELI felt a little bit like passing on VIRTUOSITY.

  3. I too was going to skip it after vaguely watching the trailer. I thought, "What good can come of Jennifer Beals and Mila Kunis in the same film?" I don't think Mila Kunis is terrible or anything. It just seemed like the kind of stylized action movie that just has a girl because there is some unwritten rule of selling films that says there has to be a hot chick. It turned out that her role was not entirely unnecessary, but probably would have been the same kind of story with a young boy in the same role, except for the bad guys trying to rape her part...Anyway, I don't want to give too much away.

She was great, and the story was totally different than the trailer told me it would be, and the action was not in the least superfluous. I would call it some of the least gratuitous (in the sense of its presence being essential to the telling of the story) action I can recall seeing in a movie.
